The Woman of Essence was created at the initiative of the ZIMU Women’s desk. Produced by  Edith WeUtonga Katiji with the music being recorded through collaboration with several studios in Harare and Bulawayo.

The project brought 71 women in music, 7 genres (Afro-jazz, Afro-fusion, reggae, sungura, dancehall & rhumba) and allowed the young and upcoming to showcase their talent under the guidance and grooming of the well established. The themes celebrate women and highlight the challenges faced by women and encourage women to keep pushing till they succeed.

The project saw women make contributions to pay for the studio fees with some studios agreeing to record for a subsidised fee.

Speaking on the project, the ZIMU president expressed gratitude to all the studio producers for the work they put through. “Special thanks go to PropaBless studio for believing in the project and offering to record the main theme song for free, and to Gas Studios for the final mix and mastering of the album. Along the way, we have lost some files in transit like the rhumba song and the producer at Maselo Studios failed to retrieve the project. The biggest thanks go to the women who brought their creative hats and shoes to make this project a reality. The United Women in Music ZW is stronger together.

The Women’s Desk Chairperson, Chioneso Rutsito said “it was a huge undertaking considering there was no budget for this. All we had was a dream and the women who Participated showed a great sense of will to see it through.
