The Zimbabwe Musicians Union and it’s membership would like to express shock & concern over the new registration tariffs by the the ministry Youth. These tariffs were released on social media platforms on the 11th April, 2023 ZIMU would like to announce that while an increase was necessary, the tarrifs are beyond the reach of musicians concerned.
The average musician is barely making enough to make a living, with most failing to make ends meet.
Event promoters and venues are not paying us enough per band to even imagine that we can pay the required monthly fees. Besides, musicians find themselves having to pay so many costs just for registration and operations to different bodies registered to NACZ.
As a sector we do not have enough support to sustain and so much needs to be addressed before we can even consider paying the new gazetted fees. Our wish is that as critical players in our sector, the ministry should have had a consultation process first to make sure that the decision was guided by the musicians involved.
This comes a few days after NACZ started meeting stakeholders in cities, yet no mention of the new fees was announced. As ZIMU, we would like the ministry to reconsider these fees immediately.
